A programme of advanced strip-testing and monitoring for the N25 Youghal Bypass initially revealed 35 locations that were identified as Areas for Resolution (ARs). This number was reduced during the course of investigation to a total of 25. The majority of these were below-ground features that had no visible surface trace. A total of five standing structures that were affected by the scheme were identified: three vernacular standing buildings, a stone bridge and a limekiln. In total eight further licences were granted to resolve the newly discovered archaeology. Seven were for specific, substantial sites that included three fulachta fiadh (see Excavations 2001, Nos 225, 141 and 228: Muckridge 2, Clashadunna East, Propoge), evidence for an unenclosed Bronze Age settlement (Ballyvergan West), a late Iron Age structure (Muckridge 1), a substantial Early Christian period ditch-enclosed settlement (Ballynacarriga 1) and a corn-drying kiln (Ballynacarriga 2). A blanket licence, 01E0543, was issued to resolve the remaining smaller isolated features (see Excavations 2001, No. 238).
