The site was originally identified during monitoring of topsoil-stripping on the N8 Glanmire– Watergrasshill Road Scheme (Excavations 2001, No. 173). It was initially considered to be of archaeological interest owing to the presence of a number of relatively small charcoal-rich deposits, but upon excavation these were found to overlie the foundation layers of a disused field boundary. The field boundary appeared to date from the 18th or early 19th century and was depicted on the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 6in. map (1841). As a result the overlying deposits were not considered to be of archaeological significance.
