The site was originally identified during monitoring of topsoil-stripping on the N8 Glanmire– Watergrasshill Road Scheme. AR21 comprised the remains of a partially cobbled trackway which was flanked to the south-west by the remains of a levelled field boundary. The trackway was oriented north-west/south-east. It was excavated for a distance of almost 27m and was 4.2m wide.

The cobbled surface of the trackway remained intact at the eastern end. At the western end occasional patches of cobbling survived within a matrix of coarse yellow sand which also appeared to have formed the surface of the track.

The trackway was flanked to the south by the remains of a field boundary which was stratigraphically later, and ran for a distance of almost 12m from the north-western limit of excavation. The field boundary comprised the levelled remains of an earthen bank flanked on both sides by the partially surviving lower course of a stone façade. This field boundary, which overlies the trackway, is depicted on the 1st edition 6in. OS map (1841), but the trackway is not shown. The absence of the latter from this cartographic source suggests that it was overgrown and out of use by the early 1840s. The trackway may date from the late 18th or early 19th century.
