Test-trenching was undertaken in advance of the construction of the N22 Ballincollig Bypass. During this process, an area of black, charcoal-stained clay, with a high percentage of heat-cracked stone fragments, was noted: a typical fulacht deposit. An area surrounding the deposit was stripped of topsoil and its extent established. The deposit was irregular, with maximum dimensions of 14m by 11.5m and a maximum depth of 0.15m. The irregularity of the spread suggests that it has been heavily truncated by modern ploughing. Underneath the spread a single pit was identified. This was oval, bowl-shaped and measured 3m north–south by 1.5m, with a maximum depth of 0.6m. From the southern end of the pit an irregular extension ran eastwards for c. 5.5m at a depth of c. 0.18m. It seems probable that this pit represents the trough of the fulacht. No hearth or other associated features were identified and dating awaits the return of the results of carbon 14 analysis of charcoal samples.
