In the course of advance testing for the Ballincollig Bypass, an area of charcoal was identified and excavated. After stripping of the surrounding area, the site comprised a spread of dark brown/black sandy silt containing charcoal. This deposit was c. 1.4m in diameter and c. 0.03m deep. It overlay a smaller deposit of red/brown silty clay, c. 1.2m in diameter and 0.05m deep. The deposits sat in a shallow depression, which cut into the natural subsoil. Dating of this feature awaits the return of results from the analysis of carbon 14 samples. The possibility that this feature is connected to land clearance and tree-burning cannot be discounted.
