Prior to construction of the N22 Ballincollig Bypass, a desk-based survey was undertaken to assess the archaeological impact of the designated route. Five known archaeological sites were identified as being at risk and a decision was made to excavate these, where necessary, in advance of construction.
Although the souterrain at this site lay outside the road-take, the potential for associated features lying within the threatened area was considered high, and consequently an area of 110m by 10m was stripped of topsoil. The area was cleaned but no archaeological features or deposits were identified. No further work was undertaken.
