Test-trenching in advance of construction of the N22 Ballincollig Bypass revealed a series of significant sites. Amongst these was a small area of limestone slabs and tiles. An area around these was stripped and cleaned. Excavation uncovered a series of interconnecting drains feeding into a shallow pond. A number of subsidiary features, a masonry platform, post-hole, hearth, etc., were associated but defied a logical interpretation. The associated finds, including quality glassware and ceramics, would appear to provide a date in the mid-18th century for activity on the site. The features and associated finds must be associated with activity which lay outside the area of the road-take. The nature of the finds would suggest high-status domestic occupation in the close vicinity of the excavated features.
