The site is located to the north of the north bank of the River Lee and to the west of the River Kiln. This area of Cork was developed from the 17th century onwards and is associated with industrial activity, particularly processing industries. The site originally sloped from west to east and the ground level was considerably reduced on the west side to facilitate previous buildings. Test excavation established that all ground levels had been reduced to bedrock on the west end of the site and the east end was raised by up to 1.8m of modern fill. No strata of archaeological interest were uncovered.
