Modifications to the heating system in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Bishop Street, were undertaken during 2000 (Excavations 2000, No. 123). During the course of this work an examination of the roof of a small chamber adjoining the boiler house, in which coal was previously stored, was undertaken. The interior of the roof appeared to be in very poor condition and possibly in need of additional support. The ground overlying this chamber was hand-excavated to assess the condition of the roof. During excavation it emerged that the area had been disturbed in the previous 50 years when the roof in question was already reinforced from above. A lightning rod and several pipes were revealed running across the area; no other features or finds were discovered.
