Topsoil monitoring of a large greenfield site at Carrigrenan, Little Island, east Cork, prior to the construction of the waste water treatment plant for Cork Main Drainage exposed extensive shell spreads along the western perimeter of the site above the shoreline (see Excavations 2001, No. 135). Three test-trenches opened across these spreads exposed a beachhead of stratified shell and beach material tapering inland. There was no evidence of human activity and the position and nature of the stratified material suggest that these layers were laid down naturally.
