In the process of test-trenching in advance of construction of the Ballincollig Bypass, a sequence of negative features was identified. An area measuring 130m by 40m was subsequently stripped and trowelled clean. Approximately 250 negative features were identified. Excavation of a number of these revealed that they were swallow or sink-holes—geological phenomena associated with the erosion of limestone bedrock by acidic rainwater. No further work was undertaken.
