Monitoring was carried out at Ballysallagh, Charleville, Co. Cork, during pipe-laying work by Cork County Council. An extension to an industrial estate close to the town required the laying of a storm drain to a nearby stream. The corridor for the pipeline extended within the constraint zone of a ringfort (SMR 3:6). The ringfort is depicted on the OS map as ‘Moanboy Fort’ and it consists of a raised circular area enclosed by a single earthen bank. The archaeological assessment entailed monitoring the entire area of the way-leave for a length of 250m on either side of the ringfort.
The A-horizon was removed with a wide toothless bucket to the top of the subsoil and the surface was subsequently examined for any in situ archaeology. Monitoring of topsoil removal indicated that no archaeological layers or features were present on the exposed surface.
