Test-trenching was undertaken in advance of construction of the N22 Ballincollig Bypass. During this process areas of black burning and brick-stained subsoil were uncovered. The surrounding area was stripped and the extent of the spreads was defined. The surviving deposits consisted of three distinct spreads of brick fragments and staining onto the natural, with linear bands of black charcoal within the spreads. The largest of these features was 11m by 11.7m. Despite the flimsy nature of the surviving deposits it was possible to interpret these features as the remains of three brick kilns, the charcoal spreads indicating the position of flues. Although no finds were recovered, the kilns can be dated to the 18th/19th century by comparison with similar sites.
