Pre-development testing of the site of a proposed 30-bedroom hotel with ancillary accommodation was carried out on 13 June 2001 at Kilfenora, Co. Clare. The site was located along the main street in Kilfenora, on land sloping south–north. A short distance to the west was Kilfenora Cathedral (RMP 16:015(01)).
Four trial-trenches were excavated, 19.5–51.5m long, 1.1–1.8m wide and 0.3–1.35m deep. The stratigraphy consisted of topsoil and recent backfill/rubble fill on the surface (in all trenches), below which were located three wall foundations (in Trenches A, B and C), natural subsoil (in Trenches A and D) and bedrock (in all trenches). The topsoil contained modern artefacts, as did the backfill and rubble fill. The three wall foundations were of modern construction.
