Monitoring of the upgrading of O’Connell Street, Ennis, Co. Clare, was carried out between 20 February and 10 May 2001. The works involved the laying of a new pavement and the laying of ducting for services. The entire length (240m) and width (5–10m) of O’Connell Street was excavated during this programme of works. The excavations were 0.2–0.9m deep. Excavations along the first 50m at the northern end of the street were completed and backfilled before the archaeologist arrived on the project. One 25m-long section of the street was left unexcavated, its northern end located at the junction with Lower Market Street.
The stratigraphy encountered below the tarred street consisted of rubble fill, existing services, a culvert, cobbles and grey boulder clay. Modern artefacts were recovered from the rubble fill. The cobbles and culvert, probably of post-medieval/ modern date, were not removed as a result of the works.
