The site lies within the zone of archaeological potential for Cavan town, across the road from the Fair Green. The site of Tullymongan Castle (SMR 20:55(04)) occupied what is now the Fair Green. It appears that it was an O’Reilly castle, first mentioned in 1427 when it was destroyed by the English. A map of 1591 shows it as a large square building and bawn.
The development site is on the north-facing slope of a drumlin ridge. Eight trenches tested the proposed site of six houses and an access road.
Grey loamy topsoil overlying yellow boulder clay was exposed. North–south land drains traversed the field, which is liable to flooding. Nothing of archaeological significance was exposed in any of the trenches.
