Pre-development testing was undertaken prior to the granting of planning permission for a single dwelling-house at Farragh, Crossdoney, Co. Cavan. The site lies at the boundary with Coolnagor townland and is close to a number of recorded archaeological sites, including two schoolhouses (SMR 25:22) associated with William Beddell, Church of Ireland bishop of Kilmore from 1629 to 1642.
The work was undertaken after an archaeological assessment which identified a potentially significant mound of stones to the south of the house site. Six test-trenches were excavated by mechanical digger in the area of the house site, the driveway, the biocycle unit and the mound. Topsoil and subsoil were relatively consistent throughout the trenches. The topsoil was on average 0.25m thick. The subsoil consisted of a grey sticky marl with occasional large stones and grits. The colour varied from medium to light grey. Testing of the mound revealed it to be a modern dump of builders’ rubble which had been covered with soil. Nothing of archaeological interest was exposed.
