Testing was carried out on a potential archaeological site, identified as a possible rath site during a field inspection undertaken as part of an archaeological assessment of a 94-acre site planned for industrial development. Two test-trenches were excavated across the site by mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless bucket. The site consisted of a relatively flat-topped mound with steeply sloping sides to the west, north and east. The mound had a maximum height of 3.5m and was bounded on the northern side by a stream. The southern sides trailed off to form a ridge, part of a complex of landscape features comprising much of the southern part of the development area. The flat-topped and steep-sided nature of the mound, the commanding views from its summit and its location close to a stream suggested that it might be the truncated remains of a rath. However, despite the positive pre-testing appearance of the site, which strongly suggested the presence of an enclosure, the site proved to be non-archaeological in nature.
