The pre-development ground investigations for the proposed Dundalk–Newry M1/A1 extension are now under way. The extension of the A1 is through south County Armagh and includes the townlands of Cloghoge Mountain, Ellisholding, Newtown, Killeen and Flurry Bridge.

Monitoring of a series of percussion rig boring and test-pits began on 17 September and continued until 13 December 2001. These were excavated to study the geological strata of the area and their possible impact on the proposed route. The test-pits were excavated using a digger and the boreholes were excavated using a percussion rig borer.

To date no archaeological finds or features have been uncovered. The remaining site investigations will take place in early spring 2002.
