Monitoring of topsoil removal in the area of two proposed access roads for the proposed Mandeville Industrial Estate was undertaken on behalf of the IDB. The estate is on the outskirts of the town of Portadown and is at present a greenfield site. This project forms part of the IDB strategy for archaeological resolution prior to planning or development.
The first roadway extended from the Mandeville Road and measured approximately 200m by 20m. Removal of the topsoil revealed evidence of several modern field drains but nothing of archaeological importance was identified.
The second roadway extended from the Parkmore roundabout on the Knockmenagh Road and was also approximately 200m by 20m. The only feature of archaeological significance identified along this stretch of road consisted of a spread of burnt mound material measuring roughly 8m by 10m and rising to approximately 0.3m above the level of the surrounding landscape. However, before further work could be carried out on this site and a programme of archaeological resolution implemented, the first cases of foot and mouth were confirmed in Northern Ireland and all non-essential work on farmland ceased.
