Monitoring of service trench excavation was carried out as part of redevelopment work on an existing coach-house. Before trench excavation the existing ground surface was cleared using a machine with a toothless bucket. The ground surface consisted of cobbles which extended from the front of the building to the Mall footpath. The removal of the cobbles revealed a disturbed layer of grey gritty sand approximately 50mm thick, most likely the bedding material for the cobbles. The service trenches were excavated to a maximum depth of 0.5m. Following the removal of the bedding material a plastic orange clay was encountered. This material continued homogeneously to the base of the service trenches and is believed to represent undisturbed subsoil. Trench 4, which extended towards the Mall, followed the line of existing services and was excavated through previously disturbed material. No archaeological deposits were recorded during the course of the monitoring.
