Archaeological testing, in compliance with a condition attached to a grant of planning in relation to a private dwelling, was undertaken at a site at Tuckmill Upper, Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow, on 29 January 2000.
The OS 6-inch and 25-inch maps of the area indicate the presence of an archaeological site (SMR 27:8—possible mound?) on the eastern end of the development site, for which there are no surface traces. However, there is an extant burial mound situated some 60m to the east of the development site. This site is described in the Archaeological inventory of County Wicklow but is not marked on any OS maps.
Four trenches were excavated to determine if any subsurface archaeological features could be identified within the boundaries of the site and, in particular, to determine if any traces of the archaeological site depicted on the OS maps could be detected. No features, deposits or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered during the course of the work. Accordingly, it is suggested that the extant monument, which lies to the east of the site, is actually that depicted on the OS maps and that a mistake was made as to its siting and subsequent cartographic depiction.
