Archaeological monitoring was conducted in phases during topsoil-stripping associated with the realignment and construction of the N11 Kilmacanogue–Glen of the Downs roadway. The sod and topsoil extended to an average depth of 0.26m and directly overlay the natural, orange, sandy clay.
A number of pits and a possible kiln were exposed during topsoil-stripping in Kilmacanogue marsh in the townland of Kilmacanogue South, at Chainage 21000 close to Kilmurry Cottages, c. 4.1m west of the edge of the old single-lane roadway. Four cuts were exposed below the sod and topsoil; these were filled with a grey, sandy clay (F003, 008 and 009). A fragment of decayed iron was recovered from F009, and a possible worked flint fragment was recovered from F008. The possible kiln measured 1.76m by 1m and contained a primary fill that consisted of a charcoal-flecked, black, sticky clay and a secondary fill consisting of a charcoal-flecked, grey, sandy clay. A large piece of slag was recovered from the secondary fill, and a possible fragment of worked flint was recovered from the primary fill. The kiln was partially cut by a modern drainage ditch to the west.
Monitoring of the road scheme is ongoing.
