An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at a development site at Stephen Street, Dunlavin, on 29 April 2000 in compliance with planning conditions in relation to the construction of five three-storey houses on the site. The site lies at the eastern side of the junction formed by Main Street and Stephen Street. Dunlavin formed part of the episcopal see lands of Glendalough before the coming of the Normans, after which it would appear to have functioned as an episcopal manor with a borough attached to it.
Six trenches were excavated by machine. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered during the course of the evaluation, and it would appear that the entire site was levelled up by the introduction of a rubble fill at sometime in the past, possibly in the 18th century when the present estate town was laid out. It was suggested that no further archaeological involvement was required at the site.
