Archaeological features at this site were located adjacent to a field fence running west-north-west/east-south-east. The features exposed were 35m from the road, covered an area of 12m x 12m and were 0.25m below present ground level. The local topography was quite level with a barely discernible slope to the east and north-east.
This site was identified during the course of topsoil-stripping. Preliminary identification of the archaeological features was as a result of the exposure of a small deposit of burnt material partially exposed through the topsoil. This feature was tested and found to extend below the surface exposed. The residual topsoil was removed to define the feature and to expose more extensive remains over the whole area. This area was demarcated, and preliminary testing was carried out to establish the full extent of the features. No features were excavated at this time, although some flint artefacts, suggesting a prehistoric date for this site, were unearthed in relation to some of the exposed features.
At this time, the only archaeological investigations on the site have involved the cleaning of the site to establish its full extent, and the planning and photography of the features prior to excavation. This work had established that the site was relatively undisturbed, with little evidence for plough damage.
Artefacts recovered from the surface-cleaning have been predominantly flint, including one scraper, a flint core and several struck flakes and split pebbles. Some possible worked quartz was also recovered. No further excavations have been carried out on this site under this licence.
