Three test-trenches were opened on 12 June 2000 at 3A Selskar Street before the construction of a three-storey building. The site was in the centre of the medieval town of Wexford and was near the junction of three medieval streets, Monck Street, Selskar Street and George’s Street.
The site to be developed was quite narrow, measuring 12m by 5m. It was aligned north-east/south-west. The first test-trench, on the west, was 2.2m by 1m. The second trench, opened in the centre of the site, was 4.2m by 1.2m. The third was opened on the east of the site, along the edge of the footpath. No archaeological deposits or features were encountered in Trenches 1 and 2. Bedrock was sealed by post-medieval and modern deposits. Bedrock was exposed 0.3m below ground level in Trench 2. Trench 3 contained a thin layer of organic deposit, in which a sherd of medieval pottery was uncovered. The possible medieval deposit seemed to extend below the footpath and the street. No other features or deposits were recorded as medieval.
Further archaeological monitoring was recommended.
