The site is adjacent to a medieval ecclesiastical site. Test-trenching was carried out on this site on foot of a decision by the local authority to grant planning permission for the construction of a dwelling-house with the condition that the client employ an archaeologist to conduct an assessment of the development.
Eight trenches were dug to depths ranging from 0.4m to 0.7m. Archaeological features were found in all of these trenches, leading to a recommendation that the whole area be stripped prior to development and fully excavated for any archaeological remains. A range of pits, drains and large plough furrows was identified, albeit at a low density. The features contained charcoal, burnt bone, iron objects, earthenware potsherds and glazed sherds. None of the features was excavated under the terms of the testing licence. Owing to non-archaeological factors, construction of the house has been indefinitely postponed.
