Limited monitoring of specified groundworks associated with the Courtown–Riverchapel Main Drainage Scheme commenced in early November 2000. An archaeological assessment of the scheme, prepared in 1995, recommended that monitoring be undertaken in proximity to specific recorded monuments and within the townland of Courtown. This mitigation strategy was subsequently agreed by Dúchas The Heritage Service. In addition, a programme of pre-development testing/monitoring of geotechnical trial-pits was undertaken during 1998 by Edmond O’Donovan (Excavations 1998, 213–14). No archaeological material was encountered during those investigations.
Monitoring, to date, has been confined to the wastewater treatment plant and to Courtown village. As yet, the only features of archaeological interest were identified during topsoil-stripping at the former area (see Excavations 2000, No. 1054).
Monitoring of all topsoil-stripping associated with the scheme and at those areas in close proximity to recorded monuments will be undertaken during 2001.
