An archaeological assessment, entailing the excavation of four test-trenches by machine, was carried out on the site of a proposed residential dwelling at Rath Upper, Co. Westmeath, on 27 October 2000. It is proposed to demolish an existing cottage and shed and to construct the house, with septic tank and percolation area.
The assessment failed to reveal the presence of archaeological stratigraphy at the site. The sod and topsoil extended to an average depth of 0.4m and directly overlay the boulder clay and stone. A pit or trial soak-hole had been excavated on the site in recent years and been backfilled with loose, natural material. All the finds recovered dated from the 19th–20th centuries. No archaeological features or deposits were exposed. The proposed development will have a negligible impact on the archaeological amenity of the adjacent monument ringfort, SMR 16:30. Consequently no further work is recommended.
