Pre-development testing was undertaken at Mill Road, Mullingar, in compliance with recommendations made by Dúchas The Heritage Service, as the development was being undertaken within the zone of archaeological significance. Westmeath County Council proposed to develop the site as a public carpark facility.
Four trenches were mechanically excavated. The stratigraphy revealed indicated no evidence of features or deposits of archaeological significance. The layers present confirmed that the area had been extensively disturbed in the recent past, with numerous fragments of plastic, rope and modern metal encountered. It appears that the site had been filled with modern rubble from adjoining developments in recent years.
