Commissioned by Westmeath County Council, this work was undertaken in compliance with recommendations made by Dúchas The Heritage Service, as the development was being undertaken within the zone of archaeological significance. The project involved the removal of the existing footpath and the construction of a new footpath on the east side of Mary Street in Mullingar town. Previous monitoring of footpath developments in Mullingar had resulted in the recovery of human remains. The monitoring was undertaken over a five-day period commencing on 17 November 2000.
The existing pathway was removed using a mechanical excavator, and a trench 1–1.5m wide and 0.5m deep was excavated. The old concrete pathway was removed, and the excavated trench was filled with stone prior to the laying of the new pathway. The stratigraphy of the trench revealed that the ground had previously been disturbed with the installation of water and sewer pipes.
