The project involved the laying of ESB cables from Market Square to Martin’s Lane in Mullingar town. As the work was being undertaken within the zone of archaeological potential, an archaeologist was required to monitor the excavation of trenches. Funding for the project was provided by Westmeath County Council. A trench 1.3m wide and 1–2m deep was excavated using a mechanical excavator.
The stratigraphy revealed indicated no evidence of features/deposits or artefacts of archaeological significance. The layers present suggested that the area had been previously disturbed; this was evident by the numerous cables and pipes encountered.
