Excavations in advance of N25 Kilmacthomas realignment, Co. Waterford, uncovered numerous archaeological sites. This burnt mound spread was one of several such sites encountered during the realignment scheme. The monument was in an area of fill for a new slip road. It was tested to ascertain its extent and evaluate the potential impact of its burial.
The mound is irregularly shaped iowing to damage by recent agricultural activity, namely a boundary ditch truncating the southern edge and ploughing of the burnt mound material to the north of this. A north-west/south-east-aligned trench through the mound showed that in situ mound material was present as a thin layer. A trough feature to the north-west of the mound material was uncovered within the section trench.
