Three small test-pits were cut through a concrete yard to the north of Grattan Square, Dungarvan. The square was laid out for the expanding town in the early 19th century, over former gardens and fields.
Estuarine silt at 0.75m below ground level was overlain by a shallow cultivation soil, overlain by a deep imported soil associated with development around the square.
