Excavations in advance of the realignment of the N25 at Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford, uncovered numerous archaeological sites. A fulacht fiadh, situated in the eastern half of the realignment, was discovered at the base of a south-facing slope, c. 8m north of a small stream. The site consisted of a trough and burnt mound that was truncated by two modern parallel drains. The trough was severely truncated to the south, probably the result of land reclamation. The monument was further truncated on the surface by ploughing. Mound material survived to a depth of no more than 0.3m. A number of areas of in situ burning were uncovered; however, these too were heavily truncated, and all that remained was the oxidised natural subsoil. The trough was placed in an area where the water-table was high, possibly for ease of filling (this was highlighted during periods of heavy rainfall, when the site flooded). To the north a line of stake-holes was uncovered, and these may have acted as a windbreak.
