A site at the western edge of Newcastle, Co. Tipperary, was proposed as the location for a housing development for the elderly. The proposed site was within the historic town of Newcastle and close to a church and graveyard and the ruins of a castle.
Initially three test-trenches were excavated in May 2000, and no archaeological material was uncovered. Subsequently groundworks on the site were monitored in November 2000, and again no archaeological material was uncovered.
