Trial-testing of the proposed site for a new public house and carpark at Ballycahill crossroads revealed two features of note. A linear feature recorded in two trenches running just inside the southern boundary wall, on the Thurles–Newport road, is interpreted as an earlier boundary ditch. The neck of a free-blown bottle, found low in the fill, suggests an 18th-century date for the feature. The second feature was clipped by the northern end of a trench across the proposed parking area, where it was seen to measure 2.9m along the section but only project a maximum of c. 0.35m into the trench.
The feature was partially excavated to a depth of 0.7m, but no material was retrieved to suggest a date or function for it. The feature itself is not threatened by development as it will be sealed by the carpark.
Editor's note: This report was formerly labelled 'Vicinity of medieval church and graveyard'.
