Pre-development testing was carried out on this site because the possible route of Cromwell’s Road may have continued 20m to the north of the proposed dwelling. Two test-trenches, 20m long by 2m wide, were opened across the possible location of this roadway. Directly under the sod was ploughsoil, beneath which was the subsoil. The ploughsoil showed evidence for furrow cultivation: this area of the field had been previously used as a vegetable garden. A further two trenches opened along the house foundations revealed a a similar deposit of ploughsoil.
No archaeological remains were uncovered during pre-development testing.
