An assessment was carried out at a site in Drummin townland, Co. Tipperary, before the proposed construction of approximately 300 houses and a retail centre on the site. A previous archaeological survey, carried out by Rosanne Meenan, revealed very faint cropmarks visible in aerial photographs; it was suggested that these possibly represented the remains of archaeological features.
Three 200m x 1.5m test-trenches were mechanically excavated through these and other possible cropmarks, none of which revealed any archaeological remains. A fourth test-trench to investigate a small earthwork visible on the surface of the field uncovered the remains of a 19th-century structure not shown on the first edition OS 6-inch map (1840) but recorded on the second edition OS 6-inch map (1901–2) as a rectangular earthwork.
