An area 50m east–west by 30m was initially stripped by machine to remove the topsoil on 18 May 2000 and was subsequently cleaned by hand to reveal the full extent of the fulacht spread, which covered an area of approximately 15.65m north–south by 7m. A particularly dense area of charcoal was evident within the north-western section of the fulacht spread and had approximate dimensions of 5.5m north–south by 5m. The spread had a maximum thickness of 0.12m, which tapered gradually towards the edges. This was removed onto the natural, grey marl boulder clay, revealing nine pits/depressions. These pits/depressions varied in shape, width and length, the largest of which measured 5m north–south by 1.5m and the smallest of which had a diameter of 0.9m. The depth of these pits/depressions also varied; the minimum depth was 0.25m and the maximum depth was 0.6m.
