Monitoring was conducted in Cashel within the archaeologically sensitive area of the medieval town on 16 and 17 November 2000, in conjunction with footpath replacement and service pipe-laying.
To achieve the path replacement, the ground was dug to a depth of 0.25–0.45m. Where service pipes were placed beneath the path, the ground was dug a further 0.2–0.25m. The natural subsoil tended to be at a relatively shallow depth. This might have been conducive to a lack of potential archaeological deposits. The most consistent finds were modern ceramics. No indication of the medieval town or Canapy Gate could be discerned. If it was still extant, it would have been uncovered in the course of monitoring the groundworks. It is believed that the shallow nature of the subsoil together with the subsequent town development obliterated all traces of archaeology.
