Pre-development testing was undertaken in February 2000. The site was immediately north of the possible line of the 17th-century fortifications, fronting the Lungy and within the zone of archaeological potential for Sligo town. Before testing, an archaeological impact assessment was carried out on the extant walls on this site. No evidence for medieval fabric was found.
The site measured 22m by 8m, and a series of test-trenches was opened across it. Modern rubble infill occurred below the present ground level. A brown organic deposit, 1m deep, was present under the rubble infill and overlay grey silt, at a depth of 1.5m. The organic deposit contained butchered bone and shell but no datable finds.
There was no evidence found to suggest medieval or post-medieval settlement on this site.
