A test excavation was carried out prior to construction of a dwelling-house in Cartronmore, Drumcliffe, Co. Sligo. Immediately to the east of the site there is an enclosure of unknown date. The site is along the road from Glencar to Castletown, c. 400m from the steep mountainside of King’s Mountain. The characteristic Benbulben cliff is c. 3km to the north-west. The land in the area is mainly grazed, and owing to the proximity to the mountainside the ground is wet and marshy in patches. Immediately to the north-west of the site there is a small stream.
The work was carried out using a JCB with a toothless bucket (1.2m wide). Three trenches, one 47m long and two 45m long, were excavated along the long axis of the site. The soil was stripped in 0.05–0.1m layers down to sterile ground. Some areas were checked by trowelling. Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded.
