The proposed development involved the erection of a wind farm and services at Largan Hill and Edmonstown, Co. Roscommon. It was recommended by DĂșchas The Heritage Service that the development be situated away from the boulder burial (SMR 8:1) and that monitoring of all ground disturbance be carried out by a licensed archaeologist. The excavations commenced in 1999 and were completed in 2000; funding for the project was provided by the developer.
The stratigraphy encountered consisted of very deep peat in parts, on top of the natural sandstone. The remains of a lockspit were found along the route to the turbines. In the south of the site, along the route of the access road, the stratigraphy consisted of topsoil over the marl, which overlay the natural sandstone. A limekiln was discovered along the western edge of the proposed the access road. An area was cordoned off around the limekiln to ensure its protection. No artefacts of archaeological significance were revealed during the excavations.
