A prominent mound in Graffoge townland was selected for testing on the basis of its resemblance to a large fulacht fiadh. The mound measured some 30m by 27m, with an apparent cut or hollow through the centre, giving the site a peculiar L-shape. The hollow measured 1m by 2m and was overgrown with scrub vegetation. The mound was up to 1.2m in height.
All vegetation was removed from the area around the hollow. A further 0.1m of clay was stripped from the sides and base of this hollow, exposing glacial till. Similarly, examination of the main body of the mound exposed glacial till at depths of around 0.1–0.15m.
On this basis, the mound was interpreted as glacial in nature, and further examination of the bog margins revealed a number of similar features.
