Pre-development testing of three trial-trenches along the route of a proposed sewer pipeline was carried out adjacent to the cathedral church of St Mary, Elphin, Co. Roscommon. Two trenches did not contain any archaeological material. Excavation of the third trench, located adjacent to the north wall of the cathedral, revealed the remains of a foundation that appears to share the same orientation as the extant church. It is possible that the foundation relates to an earlier porch indicated on the first edition OS 6-inch sheet.
