Pre-development test excavation was required by Monaghan Urban District Council of the proposed redevelopment of the site of an existing public house at 27–28 Market Street, Monaghan. This took place on 11 August 2000. The site is located within the urban archaeological zone of Monaghan town.
A single test-trench, 8m x 1m and 0.65m deep, was opened using a mini-digger. The trench was placed so as to avoid existing drainage and lay partly within an open yard and partly under an extension overhanging the yard. Excavation was through a concrete floor into underlying 18th- and 19th-century deposits, which lay directly on natural. As nothing of archaeological significance was revealed in the trench, it was recommended that this development be allowed to proceed without any further archaeological conditions.
