Two parallel trenches c. 15m long (east–west) were excavated during monitoring of groundworks carried out at the site of 8 and 9 The Diamond, Monaghan, from 14 to 16 December 2000. A short trench c. 2m long connected these two trenches. The trenches were c. 1.5m wide (north–south) and c. 1.8m deep. The sections of the trenches were composed of a homogeneous, brown, peat formation, which overlay a grey, glacial deposit. No archaeological remains, either structural or artefactual, were uncovered during the excavation.
