An assessment was carried out on the site of a proposed dwelling-house and associated services on lands at Carrickakelly, Inniskeen, Co. Monaghan, on 14 December 2000. The proposed development is located within a zone of archaeological potential as identified in the Urban Archaeology Survey of County Monaghan and is in proximity to a ringfort, SMR 29:16.
Seven test-trenches were excavated by machine within the proposed development site. The natural stone and orange boulder clay were exposed at an average depth of 0.35m below the sod and topsoil. No archaeological deposits or features were exposed, and only two 19th–20th-century finds were recovered from the topsoil in Trench 1. Consequently, the proposed development will not have an archaeological impact, and no further work is required.
