Monitoring and excavation took place over a three-week period in January 2000 at The Crosses, Co. Monaghan, in advance of construction of the Monaghan water treatment plant. The site was on the steep south-facing slope of a drumlin. Monitoring revealed the existence of three hearths and two ditches. The hearths all contained charcoal-rich deposits resting on scorched earth. No artefacts were found in any of them to indicate a date. One of the ditches was linear and extended north–south for c. 22m. It was extremely truncated and contained no artefacts. The second ditch was subrectangular and was situated in the middle of the slope. Glass was found in the bottom, indicating a post-medieval date.
